Answer 2: There may be an additional reason: You may have created the part in Solid Edge Foundation / Classic, but are now using Solid Edge Design and Draft. Solid Edge Design and Draft can open sheet metal parts, but not edit them.

Topic : Sheet metal: Cannot Flatten Sheetmetal part

Answer: 1. Ensure that there are no flanges intersecting one another in order that the part can flatten. 2. Ensure that there are no ruled surfaces in the model. What is ruled surfaces? The sheet metal part you designed may contain a ruled surface. All surfaces in a Solid Edge sheet part must be developable. That is, it is \"surface\" which can be flattened onto a plane without distortion (i.e. \"stretching\" or \"compressing\" ). Think of a car bonnet for example. In order to make the bonnet of the car the blank, flat material must be “smeared” resulting in a non-uniform material thickness. Solid Edge cannot develop parts like that as it requires extremely complex calculations.

Topic : Cannot move parts in an assembly

Answer: It is likely that you have broken relationships in your assembly indicated by a red lighting bolt next to the relationship. Fix this and the move button will appear. Alternatively, if the move button is enabled, the parts that you want to move may be in a sub assembly. Open the sub assembly and move the parts in there.

Tip: Solid Edge ST can be closed quickly by double clicking the application button (i.e. the top left circle with the Solid Edge icon.) This is consistant with the MS Office 2007 interface.

Topic : Blue Surf Problems

Answer: A blue curve is a surface stretching between a set of cross section curves. The surface can be guided along a second set of guide curves. Tips regarding the Blue Surf Commands: 1. A cross section can consist multiple sketch elements, but they must be connected. 2. The different cross sections should not touch or intersect. 3. Guide curves can consist of seperate elements, but they must be connected. (Remember to set the selection mode to single or chain, depending on what you wish to select.) 4. Each guide curve must touch/intersect each cross section once and once only. 5. A cross section can consist of a single point 6. Key point curves make great guide curves. 7. Use the green accept button after selecting each cross section. (Accept when a single point is selected for a cross section.) 8. Use the green accept button after selecting each guide curve. 9. It may be necessary at times to use the split curve command to split a derived curved into seperate pieces so that it can be used as guide cruves.

Topic : Toolbars messed up.

Answer: They new toolbars gives one a great deal of flexibility regarding where they can be placed. Recommendation: It is my recommendation that it is best to learn how the toolbars can be moved and placed by playing around with them If all else fails: You can reset your toolbars in the Windows Registry. (The Windows registry stores information such as which files were last opened, but also vital system information - so be careful what changes you make). Make sure Solid Edge is closed and that you have adminstrative rights for the current user login. The following steps are for Win XP: 1. Click on the Windows Start button. 2. Click on Run... 3. Enter regedit and press enter 4. The winodws registry will now open. Note the tree structure on the left. Go to the top of the tree structure called My Computer 5. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER 6. Open Software 7. Open Unigraphic Solutions 8. Open Solid Edge 9. Open Version 100 for Solid Edge ST 10. Click on the item in the tree UI 11. Press F2 on the keyboard to activate the rename command. 12. Rename the entry to say UI_Old Since Solid Edge will not be able to find the UI (user interface) settings for the current user, it will start with the default settings. The UI settings are loaded when Solid Edge starts and saved when Solid Edge is closed.

Topic : Sketch colors do not change as they used to

Answer: This is simpy a display / view option that must be set. Do the following: 1. In a traditional part, start a new sketch. 2. While you are in the sketch/profile environment click on the Inspect tab 3. Click on Relationship Colors to toggle the fully constrained colors to be shown or not.

Topic : Solid Edge Templates Missing

Answer: If Solid Edge is installed on a computer which did not have Solid Edge V20 (or 19 I think), Solid Edge only shows the Synchronous templates. The motivation behind this is to get new Solid Edge users to use Synchronous Modelling without learning traditional modelling. If you want all the templates displayed on the start-up screen do the following: 1. Click on the application button (the round button in the top left corner with the Solid Edge icon) 2. Click on Solid Edge Options 3. Select User Profile 4. Change the user type drop down box to Traditional and Synchronous.

Topic : Chamfer Mirror

Hi I am experiencing something odd in the ST modeling environment. If I model a shaft like a mill pinion shaft with symmetrical shaft extensions, I would typically model the one half only and then simply apply a mirror. The various journal are seperated by diameter steps which are filleted and chamfered. If I apply the chamfers first and then mirror everything, I end up with a weird cone shaped protrusion on the opposite side. This is not right and the only way I can get this right is by first applying the mirror and then all the chamfers. It is quite annoying, because I now have to manually apply double the amount of chamfers. Does anyone know why this happens? Johan
